The 20th Century Tapestry
SÉBASTIEN MEUNIER
With artists like Lurçat, Saint-Saëns, Léger, Dom Robert, Matégot or Calder, tapestry experienced a true renaissance in the 20th century, and Aubusson was its matrix.
From this traditional know-how, the cartoon painters, whether figurative or abstract, were able to create an eminently decorative art, a reflection of its time, and whose large compositions with vibrant colors could match the most bare interiors and the most vast walls.
Sébastien Meunier, a specialist in buying and selling modern tapestries, wishes to share his passion for this art with you. On this website, you will find an overview of our collections, offering the widest possible selection of 20th-century tapestries.
All these pieces were handwoven, mostly in Aubusson (Aubusson tapestry has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009), on a low-warp loom, and produced in editions of no more than eight. A boon for collectors, the tapestries are therefore rare and difficult to copy.
They can be seen in our gallery, 11bis, rue Drouot in Paris, by appointment.
