« First, I love wool, its warmth….In tapestry, I can use color and graphics… » the artist will write in « La sculpture », Paris, 1968. Known especially as a sculptor, Gilioli will produce his first cartoon in 1949, before receiving the Tapestry Prize at the 1957 Biennale in Sao Paulo; he will produce around a hundred tapestries, woven by the Pinton and Picaud workshops.
From the late 1960s onwards, Gilioli's cartoons are exclusively geometric, dichromatic or trichromatic, and are parallel to the forms explored in other media. Our tapestry reproduces here, on a smaller scale, the mosaic designed a few years earlier by the artist for the 'Le Périscope' building, a project by Novarina in the 13th arrondissement of Paris.
