It was in 1953 that Jean Picart le Doux offered Chaye the opportunity to become his assistant and encouraged him to create tapestry cartoons: he then produced numerous bucolic cartoons, as well as views of Normandy (Mont Saint Michel, Honfleur, regattas,…), from where he originated.

 

The aquatic element, in various forms (fountains, rivers, ponds… is a leitmotif for Chaye; it allows delicate colored harmonies, especially around water lilies (cf. »White dragonflies», "Freshness" …)
