Fish of the Moon
Tapestry “Poissons de la lune” woven by the Atelier Pinton. With its bolduc. Circa 1970.
Fumeron produced his first Cartoons (he would create more than 500) from the 1940s onward, working with the workshops Pinton, before receiving numerous commissions from the State, and then taking part in the decoration of the ocean liner “France”. First figurative, and influenced by Lurçat, he evolved toward abstraction, before returning to colorful and realistic figuration from the 1980s. Under the moon—reddish—fish, butterflies, and lobster frolic in an oneiric composition typical of the artist: for example, many of these motifs can be found in “Avant l’homme”, woven by the Gobelins (cf. Cat. Expo.« le Mobilier National et les Manufactures Nationales des Gobelins et de Beauvais sous la Ive République », Beauvais, 1997)
