The Fruit Harvest
An Aubusson tapestry woven by the Rivière des Borderies workshop.
With its original bolduc, and a later bolduc signed by Atelier Pinton.
1946.
Trained by Bissière in mural decoration, an eminent designer of stained glass and theatre decorator, Le Moal devoted a substantial part of his artistic activity to the monumental arts. As for the tapestry, his work, connected with friendly circles (the "Jeune France" group, Manessier, Perrot…), ultimately remained limited: it was woven at Rivière des Borderies from 1946, and, above all, at Plasse le Caisne, from 1951 ("Comedy", "Tragedy", preserved at the Mobilier National), until cartons illustrating the artist's evolution toward abstraction.
"La cueillette des fruits" illustrates the artist's "neo-Cubist" phase, a major protagonist of the "Nouvelle Ecole de Paris." René Perrot, whom he had met during the war within the context of the "Jeune France" movement, became, as early as 1945, the artistic adviser (and also the principal creator of cartoons) for the Rivière des Borderies manufactory at Felletin: it was he who approached Le Moal (as well as Manessier, Singier…), a further demonstration, once again, of the adaptability of the weavers, who wove together with artists of the most diverse kinds.
