Lured by the large art surfaces, under the influence of Untersteller at the École des Beaux-Arts, Hilaire created numerous mural paintings. Logically, from 1949 onward—and alongside many artists, encouraged by Lurçat (he took part with him in the A.P.C.T., Association des Peintres-Cartonniers de Tapisserie)—he produced numerous Cartoons (several dozen), some of which were woven in Beauvais or at the Gobelins.

"L'oiseau de feu" bears witness to a dynamic vein that was rather rare in Hilaire, whose talons or forests were better known: his fractured, kaleidoscopic style lends itself admirably, however, to the expression of movement.
