A teacher, first a figurative artist, then an abstract artist, and finally a neo-expressionist, Schlegel developed a body of painted work that was constantly evolving. As regards tapestry, from 1956 onwards he collaborated closely with the Braquenié workshop (see the auction catalogue ‘Braquenié, une histoire du décor français’, Deburaux/Sotheby’s, 27 October 2005), to whom he entrusted several dozen cartoons : a distinctive shared aesthetic—figurative, decorative and poetic—emerged, with Marie Dambiermont, Colette Bardin, Marcel Saint-Martin…
Here, the human figure has disappeared, giving way to a traditional fishing activity, fire fishing: ‘underwater’ cartoons were then commonplace (particularly with Picart le Doux), reflecting the sense of wonder evoked by the silent world.
