If, at the start of his career, he became known as a painter of large-scale decorative schemes (notably for the stage), Carzou’s forays into tapestry were relatively rare. This cartoon reveals the artist’s unmistakable style—made of intertwining lines illustrating dreamlike subjects: the theme is a reworking of the (single) cartoon by Carzou woven by the Manufactures Nationales, « l’invitation au voyage » (an invitation to travel). At the dawn of the 3e millennium (and just a few months before his death), the artist—an outspoken, consistent critic of modern society—offers a singular vision of journeys yet to come, directed toward aerostation and sailing ships.
