Carzou was most noted at the start of his career as a decorative painter (notably for the theatre), and his work for tapestry is relatively rare and only produced by Pierre de Tartas. His style is immediately recognisable in this cartoon, the busy hatching illustrating dream-like subjects : The theme is a reinterpretation of Carzou’s (only) cartoon produced by the Manufactures Nationales, ‘L’invitation au voyage’. On the cusp of the third millennium (and a few months before his death), the artist – a regular critic of modern society – had a unique vision of the travel of the future, centred on hot-air ballooning and sailing.
