Etcher by training (Prix de Rome for engraving in intaglio in 1942), Jean Louis Viard produced his first cartoons in the mid-1950s.\n\nFirst figurative (he worked then with Picart Le Doux), he later followed the natural inclination of many painters-cartoonists (the same as Matégot, Tourlière, Prassinos,…) by moving toward abstraction. He made dozens of cartoons up until the 2000s, alongside his work as a painter and engraver, while showing particular interest in materials and textures, in the manner of the proponents of “New Tapestry,” of which Pierre Daquin, who wove them, was one of the major figures.\n\nHis themes, sometimes metaphysical (“Memories”, “Fates”,….) encompass broad ranges—from astronomical infinity (“solar darknesses”) to cellular tiny-ness (“Vegetal Mutation”): an abundant and varied body of work, regularly exhibited at La Demeure, in various salons or special exhibitions, and more significantly at the Comparaison salon, where he was responsible for the Tapestries section.\n\nProvenance : atelier of the artist
