Child’s Waistcoat with Mirages

Aubusson tapestry woven by the Atelier Legoueix.
1997.

Provenance: Sautour-Gaillard workshop

A pupil of Wogensky at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués, Sautour-Gaillard saw his first woven cartoon produced in 1971 by the Atelier Legoueix (a collaboration that never failed to endure), and he went on to multiply monumental projects, the most spectacular of which is « Pour un certain idéal » (For a Certain Ideal), a hang of 17 tapestries on the theme of Olympism (held in the Musée de l’Olympisme in Lausanne). First close to lyrical abstraction, in the 1990s the artist produced cartoons based on the assembling of decorative motifs, textures and figures, apparently superimposed yet unified through the weaving.

The two vests from the exhibition « Archéologies » held at the Inard gallery in 1997 bear witness to the desire of the « Aubusson supply chain », then in a state of disarray, to vary its output. Sautour-Gaillard, himself a major collector of fabrics, presents there the same inspiration as in his contemporary woven collages.
