1959.
After the customary passage through mural decoration in the 1930s, Jullien turned to Aubusson in 1936, formed a close bond with Picart le Doux in 1947, and became a member of the A.P.C.T. (Association des Peintres-Cartonniers de Tapisserie). He then devoted himself to tapestry with zeal and produced 167 cartoons, first figurative, following Picart le Doux and Saint-Saëns; then, under the influence of the scientific themes he explored, he evolved toward abstraction. In 1981, two years before his death, he donated his workshop to the Musée départemental de la tapisserie at Aubusson.
This is a transitional cartoon for Jullien, between figuration and abstraction. It already features contrasts of tones, vertical lines, …. which are later found in “Espace poétique de l’industrie”, a group of cartoons on the theme of Technique and Industry that he will develop from the end of 1959 (see, for example, “Hélium”).
