La boule (the ball)
Aubusson tapestry woven by the Micheline Henry workshop. With signed label, n° 1/2. Circa 1980.
In a supportive family setting (Mathieu Matégot was his father, Micheline Henry who wove his cartoons, his companion), Sully was able to become one of the notable artists of Tapestry in the 1970s–80s. Unfortunately, his artistic emergence took place at a time when the medium was out of favor, efforts that public authorities did not manage to overcome—advances for weaving, exhibitions…—meant that his production therefore remained largely confidential (the Musée de la Tapisserie d’Angers nevertheless preserves a few of his works).
Sully’s work is geometric (as was his father’s in the 1970s) at its quintessence (cf. the titles “petite pyramide”, “la boule”…), yet it contains many nuances, where gradations and cast shadows temper the flat areas : in our cartoon, note the challenge of circular weaving, and the drawn shadows.
