Aubusson tapestry woven by the Pinton workshop.
Circa 1950.

On his return to France in the 1950s, following a long stay in Argentina, Berroeta produced numerous cartoons, initially in a figurative style (animals, figures, etc.) before turning towards abstraction, as in his paintings.

Whilst he revisited the motif of fish – a very common theme in the tapestries of the time (see Lurçat, Picart le Doux) – Berroeta can lay claim to genuine legitimacy in a subject he explored on several occasions, in ‘Mer du Sud’ for example.
