Composition
An Aubusson tapestry woven by the Atelier Pinton.
With its bolduc.
c. 1960.
A very young painter who moved toward abstraction from the end of the 1940s, Longobardi was entrusted with large-scale wall decoration commissions, in France and abroad (the Presidency of the Republic of Abidjan, the rectorship of the Académie de Poitiers...), as well as numerous tapestry Cartoons, in particular for the Manufactures Nationales, with subjects sometimes highly modern (“the motorway”, “the airport”…). Longobardi was, moreover, at the time—together with Singier, or Springer—among the very first abstract artists to receive public commissions: while it falls within abstraction, his aesthetic evolved over the course of time, from sharp, cutting forms toward a more lyrical, movement-filled style, until the settling, more at ease, of the 1960s.
